All athletes at risk of head trauma should have baseline concussion testing so that their level of functioning in areas associated with difficulties following head trauma can be measured. Areas to be measured and documented including estimated intellectual functioning, processing speed, working memory, visual and verbal memory, flexibility in switching between tasks and rules, and sustained attention and concentration. Baseline testing identifies each athletes specific abilities in these areas, which can then be compared to their abilities following head trauma. Data collected through baseline testing allows parents and other care providers to make educated decisions regarding return to play and alternate supports to ensure optimal functioning.
